Our Rums
The Panama History Series RUMS
History and Culture
The city of Panama, founded by a Spaniard of Jewish origin, Don Pedro Arias Dávila, better known as Pedrarias Dávila, on August 15, 1519, the day of Our Lady of the Assumption.2 This city replaced Santa María la Antigua del Darién and Acla, becoming the capital of Castilla del Oro.
From this place the expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire of Peru set out in 1532 and it was a stopover on one of the most important trade routes in the American continent, which led to the famous fairs of Nombre de Dios and Portobelo, through which most of the gold and silver extracted from the mines that the Spanish exploited in America passed.
